Summer SOS for Curly Hair: Pool Hair Don’t Care!

Summer’s here, and just like the beach, the pool quickly becomes our favorite daily habit! Swimming is the perfect way to cool off, but… what about our hair? Chlorine, constant washing, and sun exposure can really take a toll. Don’t worry though, we’ve got the tips that’ll save your curls!

What does chlorine do to your hair?

Chlorine strips away natural oils, leaving your hair dry and brittle. If it’s dyed, it can also fade the color. Constant contact with water and frequent shampooing can throw off your scalp’s balance, making your hair either super dry or overly oily and that makes styling a struggle. Let’s not forget the sun - especially living in Cyprus or Greece - those UV rays damage your strands and make them look dull and tired.

So how can we enjoy the sun, sea, and pool guilt-free?

Before the pool:

  1. Rinse your hair with clean water because wet hair absorbs less chlorine.
  2. Apply a leave-in conditioner to shield and hydrate.
  3. Use a rich, sun-protective mask like the CurlyEllie Intensive Treatment Mask - perfect both before and after swimming to reduce frizz and protect from UV.
  4. Add a lightweight mist like the Flora & Curl Detangling Mist, which adds sun protection and helps with detangling on the go!

But prevention is just half the story, after-care matters too!

After the pool:

  1. Rinse immediately with clean water.
  2. Once you get home, use a clarifying shampoo to remove chlorine buildup and follow up with a nourishing mask and leave-in conditioner to lock in hydration.
  3. Gently detangle with a brush made for curls to avoid breakage.

Extra summer tips:

  • Use a deep conditioner once a week.
  • Minimize the use of heated styling tools as much as possible.
  • Drink lots of water - hydration starts from the inside!
